A brief history of desktop companions

Desktop pets have been around almost as long as graphical user interfaces themselves. The concept is simple and irresistible: a small animated character that lives on your computer screen, existing purely to bring you joy.

The pioneers

Neko (1989) — One of the earliest desktop pets, Neko was a small cat that chased your mouse cursor around the screen. Originally created for the NEC PC-9801, it was ported to virtually every operating system. Simple, charming, and utterly addictive.

eSheep (1995) — Perhaps the most beloved desktop pet of all time. A small sheep that walked across your Windows desktop, climbed on windows, bounced off edges, and occasionally fell asleep. Created by Adriano Petrucci, eSheep had no purpose beyond being delightful — and that was enough.

Bonzi Buddy (1999) — The cautionary tale. A purple gorilla that was technically spyware disguised as a helpful desktop assistant. Bonzi Buddy taught us an important lesson: desktop companions should bring joy, not harvest your data.

The quiet years

As operating systems became more locked down and security-conscious, desktop pets largely disappeared. macOS sandboxing, Windows UAC, and the general shift toward web apps meant there was less room for playful desktop applications.

For nearly two decades, desktop pets existed mainly as nostalgia.

The comeback

Something shifted around 2023-2024. Maybe it was pandemic-era remote work making people crave companionship. Maybe it was the rise of AI making "companions" feel more meaningful. Whatever the cause, desktop pets are back.

The new generation

Dockitty — A cute cat that lives in your macOS dock. Simple and charming, it brought back the basic joy of having a pet on your screen.

Dinoki — Virtual desktop dinosaurs with retro pixel art aesthetics. Appeals to the nostalgia crowd with a modern twist.

Desktop Goose — A chaotic goose that steals your mouse, drags memes onto your screen, and generally causes mayhem. Proof that desktop pets can go viral.

Shimeji — Cute anime-style characters that climb around your browser windows. Popular in the anime community with thousands of custom characters.

What makes Noppup different

We love all of these apps. But we saw an opportunity to take the desktop pet concept further — way further.

Not just cute — actually useful

Previous desktop pets were purely decorative. Noppup combines the emotional warmth of a desktop companion with genuine productivity tools:

  • AI Chat powered by Claude — your pet is a brainstorm partner, writing assistant, and conversation companion
  • Pomodoro Timer — stay focused with built-in work/break sessions
  • Mood Journal — track how you're feeling throughout the day
  • Wellness Reminders — gentle nudges to stretch, hydrate, and take breaks
  • Sticky Notes — quick thoughts right on your desktop

Personality, not pixels

While some modern desktop pets lean into pixel art or retro aesthetics, we went a different direction. Noppup's characters are designed to feel warm, modern, and expressive. Each of the 8 pets has a distinct personality that comes through in their animations, speech bubbles, and AI interactions.

Native and lightweight

Noppup is a native macOS app, not an Electron wrapper. It uses less than 50 MB of RAM and under 2% CPU. Your pet lives on your desktop without slowing anything down.

Privacy-first

Unlike a certain purple gorilla from 1999, Noppup doesn't collect your data. AI conversations are processed securely and not stored. Your mood journal and notes stay on your device.

The future of desktop companions

We believe desktop pets represent something important: the humanization of our digital workspaces. As we spend more and more time in front of screens, the emotional quality of that experience matters.

The next generation of desktop companions won't just be decorative — they'll be genuinely helpful, emotionally intelligent, and deeply personal. That's the future we're building with Noppup.
