Why We Built Noppup

The story behind Noppup — nostalgia for desktop pets, the loneliness of remote work, and a vision for something better.

A sheep walked across our screen, and everything changed

If you grew up in the late '90s or early 2000s, you might remember eSheep — a tiny animated sheep that walked across your Windows desktop, bouncing off window edges and occasionally falling asleep. It was completely useless. And it was absolutely wonderful.

Fast forward twenty years. Most of us spend 8-12 hours a day staring at screens. Remote work has become the norm. And while we've gained flexibility, we've lost something harder to quantify: the ambient presence of other people.

The loneliness problem nobody talks about

Here's something we noticed: the tech industry has built incredible tools for productivity — task managers, focus timers, calendar optimizers. But almost nothing for the emotional side of working alone.

When you're in an office, there's someone to say good morning to. Someone who notices when you've been at your desk too long. Someone who makes you laugh during a coffee break. Working from home, your screen is your only companion. And screens don't check in on you.

What if your screen could care?

That's the question that started Noppup. What if there was something on your desktop that felt alive? Not a notification. Not a widget. Something with personality.

We wanted to build a companion that:

  • Feels present — it walks around your screen, reacts to your clicks, falls asleep when you're idle
  • Actually helps — with an AI chat powered by Claude, a built-in Pomodoro timer, mood journaling, and wellness reminders
  • Respects your flow — it's lightweight, unobtrusive, and gets out of the way when you need to focus
  • Makes you smile — because sometimes that's the most productive thing that can happen in your day

Built for Mac, built with love

We chose to build Noppup as a native macOS app because we wanted it to feel like it belongs on your Mac. It uses less than 50 MB of RAM and under 2% CPU. It integrates with your desktop naturally — your pet walks on top of your windows, sits on your menu bar, and feels like a real part of your workspace.

The AI chat is powered by Claude, which means your Noppup isn't just cute — it's genuinely helpful. Ask it to brainstorm ideas, explain a concept, draft an email, or just chat when you need a break.

This is just the beginning

We're starting with 8 pet characters, each with their own personality and animations. But we have so much more planned: customizable outfits, seasonal events, desktop interactions, and a growing library of companions.

Noppup isn't trying to be another productivity app. It's trying to make your screen feel a little less lonely and a lot more joyful.

Download it free and meet your new desktop companion. We think you'll love it.
